The 1.74 Lens Shortage: Why ECPs Need the Freedom to Choose

Recently, many eye care professionals received a letter explaining that supply constraints affecting 1.74 high-index lens material could impact availability in the coming months. The recommendation was to reserve 1.74 material for higher prescriptions while fitting many patients between +7.00 and -7.00 diopters with 1.67 high-index material or comparable alternatives.

The goal behind these recommendations may be to manage supply challenges and avoid delays, but it raises an important question:

When it comes to choosing the best lens for a patient, who should make that decision, the eye care professional or the supplier?

Imagine visiting your physician and being told that a medication or medical device they believe is the best fit for you is unavailable through their preferred supplier, so they are recommending something else instead.

Most patients would naturally ask:

"Is that option available somewhere else?"

If another trusted source can provide the same solution, most healthcare professionals would consider it because their responsibility is to the patient first.

Optical should be no different.

Patients Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Every patient is different.

Two people with the exact same prescription may have completely different needs. One patient may want the thinnest possible lens for cosmetic reasons. Another may prioritize weight. Another may have chosen a frame where a specific material provides the best overall result.

Those decisions happen at the dispensing table, during conversations between the patient and their eye care professional.

That is where they should happen.

Optometrists and opticians have the experience and knowledge to evaluate the complete picture, not just the prescription. They understand their patient's lifestyle, expectations, frame choice, and visual needs. They should have the ability to recommend the lens solution they believe is best, rather than just selecting from what is easiest to get.

Supply challenges are a reality in every industry. But supply challenges should not automatically direct patient care.

A Supply Challenge at One Supplier Does Not Mean Fewer Options Everywhere

Here's the thing: a supply limitation at one supplier does not mean the entire optical industry faces the same limitation.

Many independent labs continue to provide 1.74 high-index lenses without restricting prescription ranges or asking practices to change their recommendations.

If a material provides meaningful benefits for a patient and is available through another reputable lab, that option deserves consideration.

Supply challenges should encourage practices to explore additional resources, not just accept fewer choices.

The Bigger Conversation Is About Choice

This discussion is about more than one lens material.

It’s about maintaining the ability of ECPs to make decisions based on their expertise and their patients' needs.

When options become limited, ECPs lose the flexibility to recommend the solution they believe is best for each patient. Patients may lose access to solutions their ECP believes would provide the best balance of optics, appearance, comfort, and performance. Practices lose flexibility. And the industry loses the competition that drives innovation.

Progress has never been created by reducing choices. It has always come from expanding possibilities.

Independent labs exist because practices deserve options.

They provide alternatives when a single supplier can’t meet every need. They provide flexibility when the industry faces challenges. Most importantly, they help ensure that ECPs remain in control of the decisions that affect their patients.
